The first phase is always to understand the goal and then create a solid plan. It's important to write down and confirm the distribution, business and project objectives, audience and emotion. This gives us the foundation for creating your perfect video. The visual part of the plan can take many forms depending on the project but normally includes a moodboard or styleframes to quickly work through different styles we think might work and storyboard which shows the flow and structure of the video.
Next we move onto creating styleframes to show the art direction for the project and create any assets required for the final animation. Styleframes are frames from the storyboard that I design in the style of the final animation based on our moodboards. This gives us an accurate representation to edit and tweak until we are happy to move on to the next stage. Once we have confirmed the styleframes I can start creating any assets required for the rest of the project such as typography, graphics and illustrations.
The final stage is to bring the project to life through movement and audio. I use different animation techniques such as classic tweening and frame by frame alongside motion principles to create smooth animation that flows and reflects the mood of the styleframes. It's important to create movement that enhances the message of the project rather than distracts from it. I add and mix any audio including voiceovers, background music and sound effects before finally exporting the animation ready for the desired distribution platform.
